What's worse: bragging or false modesty?

Example of how false modesty backfires: you take a test, someone says "that was sooo hard" and asks how you did on it and you reply "ehh not so well" so you dont make them feel bad, and then you get the test back and ace it and then feel like the biggest jerk ever. Wouldn't bragging and say you did well on it be better?
