Usage of Xbox Live in China?

Hi I live in Britain and consequently have a british Xbox Live account. a couple of times a year I have to go to China for a couple of months because my dad is working on contract there. The last couple of times I went to China I took my PS3 but was unable to connect to PSN (I can't remember the exact error) I know it wasn't the wifi because it worked fine for playing minecraft online and I could go back on PSN when I came back home. I am going back to china for a rather long time on wednesday and I'm not sure if I will be able to suppress my boredom for long without online game-play, so I'm wondering if I would be able to use Xbox Live while in China? Also I don't think that PSN is banned in China so can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong, or what I can do to get it working?
